Everything travelers need to know about paying, withdrawing cash, and managing money abroad — so you spend less on fees and more on experiences.
Cards with no foreign transaction fees offer near-mid-market exchange rates and are safer than cash. However, many destinations require cash: street food in Vietnam, markets in Morocco, local transport in India and Japan, temples throughout Asia. Always carry local cash regardless of how card-friendly a destination appears.
No foreign transaction fee; exchange rate close to mid-market; ATM fee reimbursement; worldwide Visa or Mastercard network; easy app-based card freeze; zero-liability fraud protection.
Japan: largely cash-based — ATMs at 7-Eleven, Lawson, and Japan Post accept foreign cards reliably. Vietnam, Indonesia, Morocco: primarily cash outside hotels and tourist restaurants. UK, UAE, Singapore, Australia: very card-friendly, contactless standard. USA, Canada: cards everywhere, tipping in cash is appreciated. Argentina: use legal exchange houses only. Europe: broadly card-accepting in the west, more cash-reliant in the east and south.
Use ATMs inside bank branches or well-lit commercial buildings. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN. Decline "ATM conversion" offers — always withdraw in local currency. Use ATMs during daylight in busy areas, especially in Latin America and parts of Southeast Asia.
